Network Rail have let me know they will be investing £1m to upgrade the bridge over the railway on Dalsholm Road near Kelvindale station. However, this will mean that to enable this work to be delivered safely, a single lane road closure with 4-way traffic light control will be in place for the entire three-month project.
This will impact traffic on
- Dalsholm Road,
- Cleveden Road,
- Skaethorn Road
- Temple Road
Train services will be not be affected by the works. However, pedestrian access is not planned over the structure during this work.
I suspect this work will be highly disruptive, but from what I can see, unavoidable. The important matter is this investment will ensure safety and the longer term future for the bridge.
This will be a major inconvenience for motorists but have a greater impact for pedestrians.I have asked Network Rail if any consideration been given to pedestrian access, given the number of businesses off Dalsholm Road.
The bridge will be strengthened with masonry repairs, the replacement of missing stonework, vegetation clearance work and the installation of new fencing all taking place. Network Rail have issued a notification letter to the local community about this work which is (I have copied this below for reference.)
If you have any questions you can contact our the Network Rail helpline on 03457 11 41 41.

Dear neighbour,
The railway touches most communities in Scotland, which means we have neighbours who live close to the tracks and other infrastructure. It’s our role to run a safe, reliable and efficient railway, serving customers and communities.
As part of our commitment to Scotland’s Railway we’re carrying out bridge maintenance works on Dalsholm Road, which includes structural strengthening, general masonry repairs, replacement of a brick wall with palisade fencing, and vegetation management.
Work will start on Monday 12 August and will continue until November 2024. A schedule of work is attached.
To enable this work to be delivered safely, a single lane road closure with 4-way traffic light control will be in place throughout. This will disrupt traffic using Dalsholm Road, Cleveden Road, Skaethorn Road and Temple Road
A temporary compound area will be located behind Maryhill Station over the course of the project.
We’ll work during the day when we can, however when we’re working close to the railway line we need to carry out some of the work at night. This keeps our staff safe and minimises disruption to passenger and freight services.
We’ll be using specialised equipment including plant and machinery which will generate some noise. We’re sorry for any disturbance this may cause.
Kind Regards
Community Relations Team, Scotland
