Drugs Death Crisis

Joe Fitzpatrick and Rev Brian Casey

My thanks to Rev Brian Casey from Springburn Parish Church for taking the time to discuss his local experience of the drug deaths crisis as it impacts our community in Springburn. Brian met with Joe FitzPatrick MSP, Scotland’s Public Health Minister.

My thanks also to Helen Carroll for her thoughtful input also and for showing the Minister around the Springburn Community Hub.

I was pleased to secure this meeting following our joint representations to the Scottish Government. I look forward to working with Brian on this hugely important issue in the months ahead.

Equal Protection for Children

Scotland has become the first part of the UK to ban the smacking of children, after MSPs at Holyrood passed a member’s bill brought forward by John Finnie MSP. I am pleased to have voted for this measure to ensure that children, without exception, have the same protection from assult as adults in law.

FavourUK

Favour UK Favour UK discussion

I was grateful to be invited to Favour UK event in Glasgow. Along with other elected representatives, I was able to meet and discuss with those suffering from, and those bereaved by drug deaths. There is much good work being done here to raise awareness, and I will continue to do what I can to help. Too many people are dying from drugs in our communities.

Benzodiazepine Dependency

In the Scottish Parliament I raised issues surrounding the need for better public health (including GP) support for those with benzodiazepine dependency. I will continue to pursue this matter. You can watch the video here: https://twitter.com/i/status/1179807366423961601

Powerchair Football

SPFA Powerchair Football

Thanks to the SPFA for giving me information on powerchair football in Scotland, including about Glasgow Gladiators. I was delighted to find out more and learn about the opportunities for those using a powerchair to get involved in the sport.

Sighthill Update

Sighthill

I visited Sighthill with Councillor Allan Casey. We were joined by DRS Project Management & Design as well as representatives of Morgan Sindall, Glasgow City Council’s infrastructure Contractor.

It was good to see the progress in Sighthill. This development will see a huge number of new homes coming to the constituency, as well as a brand new school campus. The transformation is part of a £250m masterplan in partnership with the Scottish Government, Glasgow City Council and GHA.
