Meeting Secured In Springburn Regarding Drug Deaths.

I want to update constituents regarding the drug deaths crisis that has taken its toll on many families and communities in our constituency and across Scotland. Together with Reverend Brian Casey (Springburn Parish Church) we have secured a visit from the Public Health Minister Joe Fitzpatrick MSP to hear about the issues facing local communities first hand.

Reverend Casey is well placed given that 30% of funerals he has conducted in the last 5 years have involved drugs as a factor one way or another.

Meeting Organisers of Drug Death’s Vigil

Constituents will be aware of the Drug Deaths vigil which was held in George Square recently. I had the privilege of meeting with constituents and organisers of the vigil along with my colleague Patrick Grady MP. The group had powerful testimony and lived experience of the complex issues at play. Myself and Patrick asked some questions, but mostly we just listened. What we heard was both humbling and challenging. It was also sincere and insightful. We intend working with the group going forward to ensure that their voices are front and centre when the Scottish Government and Drugs Death Task Force seek to tackle this deeply worrying public health emergency.
